This is a parking meter. Except that it’s not. It’s not near the curb, nor is it near any parking spot. It stands on the sidewalk on the corner of Market Street and Lombard Street near Power Plant Live. Instead of an individual inserting coins for a parking spot, one can insert change that goes directly to the homeless. I thought this was a great idea.
The outside reads, “It’s okay to say No to panhandlers, and Yes to helping homeless people.”
The inner part of the meter reads, “Your change could help someone turn the corner.”
The gauge on the meter goes from “DESPAIR—-> To —-> HOPE”
Good job Baltimore… I like this!

Z magazine is the streetpaper of Amsterdam and is issued by the Z Foundation. The aim is to help the homeless help themselves. By selling the paper, homeless people can acquire for themselves a modest income and (once more) build a basis of regularity, social contacts and self-esteem.
